Milos with Kids by Boat — Family Guide (2026)
One of the most common questions we get from families planning a trip to Milos is whether renting a boat or joining a cruise is suitable for children. The answer is: it depends on the age of your children and how you plan the day — but done right, a boat day is one of the best experiences a family can have in the Cyclades.
We have taken families with children as young as two on our boats. We have also had days where the conditions were not right for very young children and we have said so honestly before departure. This guide tells you everything you need to know to plan the right boat day for your family.
Why a Boat Day Works Well for Families
The water. The south coast beaches accessible by boat — Firiplaka, Gerakas, Tsigrado — have shallow, calm, clear water that is perfect for children. Firiplaka in particular has a long bay of fine sand with water that is knee-deep for thirty metres. Children can swim, paddle and play safely while adults snorkel nearby.
The freedom. On a milos boat rental, you set the pace. If your children need a long stop at a calm beach, you stay. If they are tired in the afternoon, you head back early. There is no fixed group itinerary to follow.
The experience. Children tend to find the boat itself exciting — the movement, the spray, spotting fish through the clear water, seeing the rock formations at Kleftiko from the sea. It is an active, engaging day that does not involve dragging children around archaeological sites.
No overheating. On a boat there is always a breeze and a sunshade. Children who overheat on crowded beach days tend to do much better on the water.
Which Boat Option Is Best for Families?
Self-Drive Milos Boat Rental
Best for families with older children (8+) who are comfortable swimmers. The freedom to stop anywhere, anchor for as long as you want and leave when the children are tired makes the rental format ideal for families who want to control their own day.

Private Skippered Cruise
Best for families with younger children (under 8) or those who want a more structured, relaxed experience. With a skipper handling navigation, adults can focus entirely on the children. The skipper knows the calmest anchorages, the best swimming spots for young children and when conditions are suitable for each stop.

Group Cruise
Not ideal for very young children. Group milos boat tours run to a fixed itinerary and departure time. With a toddler or young child, the inflexibility can be challenging. We recommend private options for families with children under 6.
The Best Destinations for Families with Children
Firiplaka — the Best Family Beach
Wide, shallow, calm. Fine sand rather than rock. A long bay where children can wade out without getting out of their depth for thirty metres. Facilities available (beach bar, sunbeds) if you combine by road.
By boat, anchor in the western part of the bay away from the beach bar crowd. The water here is slightly deeper and better for snorkelling; the eastern end closer to the cliff is the shallowest and best for young children.
Gerakas — Calm and Beautiful
The amber pebble beach at Gerakas is sheltered on all sides. Even on days with some meltemi wind, Gerakas remains calm. The pebble bottom means no sand in everything, and the enclosed cove is safe for children to swim in without any current.
The one consideration: the pebble shore is not ideal for crawling toddlers. Bring water shoes for young children.
Tsigrado — Older Children Only
The approach to Tsigrado involves anchoring outside and swimming to shore. Not suitable for children who are not confident swimmers. For families with older children (10+) who can swim 30–40 metres, it is a memorable stop. For younger children, skip it and spend more time at Firiplaka or Gerakas.
Kleftiko — Manageable for Most Ages
Kleftiko is the most dramatic stop and the one children tend to remember most clearly. Anchoring in the lagoon, swimming through the cave, looking at the rock formations from the water — it is genuinely exciting for children from around age 6 upwards.
The cave passage at Kleftiko requires swimming through a natural tunnel. Children who are not confident swimmers or are afraid of enclosed spaces should stay in the main lagoon. The lagoon itself is safe and beautiful even without going into the caves.
Practical Tips for Boat Days with Children
Book a private cruise or rental rather than a group tour. The flexibility is essential when you have children. Being able to extend a stop at a calm beach or leave early if a child is unwell makes an enormous difference.
Depart early. Children do better in the morning — less tired, less heat, calmer sea conditions. Aim to be on the water by 8:30–9:00am. By early afternoon most young children are ready for a rest, which aligns perfectly with heading back.
Plan one main stop and one secondary stop. A full south coast circuit with six stops is too much for young children. Plan: Firiplaka or Gerakas as the main swimming stop (90 minutes minimum), Kleftiko as the highlight (60 minutes), and head back. That is a perfect family day.
Bring more food than you think you need. Children on boats are hungrier than usual — the sea air and physical activity increase appetite significantly. Pack proper food for a full lunch plus snacks for every hour on the water.
Sun protection is critical. The combination of water reflection, breeze masking the heat and long exposure time makes sunburn on boats severe and fast. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen before departure, reapply every hour, use a rash guard and keep hats on during passages.
Life jackets are provided and mandatory for children. We carry life jackets for all sizes including young children. They are required to be worn during passages and are available throughout the day.
