The southwestern coast of Milos is a 40-kilometre stretch of volcanic rock with zero road access. No paths, no buses, no scooter tracks. The only way in is from the sea. That coastline contains Kleftiko — arguably the most spectacular natural formation in the entire Cyclades — along with the collapsed sea cave of Sykia, the amber beaches of Gerakas, and dozens of hidden coves that have no name on any map.
A milos boat rental is not a luxury — it is the only way to truly experience what makes this island extraordinary. The same applies to organised boat tours. You are not paying for a nice day out. You are paying for access to places that simply do not exist from land.
Types of Milos Boat Tours
Self-Drive Boat Rental
You rent the boat and drive it yourself. No skipper, no fixed itinerary, no departure time to meet. You anchor where you want, stay as long as you like, and move on when you are ready.

Best for: Independent travellers, couples, families with older children, anyone who wants total freedom over their day.
Private Skippered Cruise
You book the entire boat for your group and an experienced skipper handles all navigation. Your group is the only one on board. The route can often be customised — more time at Kleftiko, a crossing to Polyaigos, a sunset stop on the way back.

Best for: Solo travellers, couples who enjoy meeting other people on the water.
Half-Day vs Full-Day
Half-day (4–5 hours): Enough time to reach Kleftiko and Sykia, swim at both and return. Best if you are short on time or want to combine the boat with something else in the afternoon.
Full-day (7–9 hours): Allows you to visit Kleftiko, Sykia, Polyaigos and still have time for a proper lunch at anchor, more swimming stops and a relaxed return. This is the format that most people remember years later.
If you have a full day available, always take the full day. The difference between a half-day and a full-day Milos boat tour is not just time — it is an entirely different experience.
What Every Milos Boat Tour Should Include
Before you book any milos boat tour, confirm the following:
Always included — non-negotiable:
- Life jackets for all passengers
- Safety briefing before departure
- Snorkelling stops at Kleftiko and/or Sykia
- At least 45 minutes at Kleftiko — anything less is not enough
Usually included in good tours:
- Drinking water and soft drinks

- Fuel — always confirm this separately, some operators charge extra

The Most Important Stops on Any Milos Boat Tour
Kleftiko
The non-negotiable centrepiece of any Milos boat tour. Enormous white rock formations on the southwestern tip of the island, carved by centuries of wind and sea into arches, caves and natural harbours. The name means "pirates" — this was where corsairs sheltered their ships.
You anchor in the lagoon and explore by swimming. Sea caves you can pass through. Arches wide enough to sail under. Snorkelling visibility regularly exceeding 20 metres. There is nothing else in Greece quite like it.
Sykia — The Collapsed Sea Cave
Ten minutes from Kleftiko. A sea cave whose roof partially collapsed centuries ago, leaving an open-sky chamber of volcanic rock. You enter through a narrow passage in the cliff and emerge into total stillness. The water inside is simultaneously green, blue and completely transparent.
The best milos boat tours give you at least 30–45 minutes at Sykia. If yours offers only a brief stop, it is not doing the place justice.
Polyaigos
An uninhabited island directly south of Milos. Turquoise lagoons, white pebble beaches, zero infrastructure. Reaching Polyaigos requires a 25-minute crossing and is only possible in calm conditions — but on the right day, it is the best swimming spot in the southern Aegean.
Only full-day tours and direct milos boat rentals can reach Polyaigos properly. You need at least 90 minutes there to make the crossing worthwhile.
What to Ask Before You Book
1. How many people maximum are on the boat? On private tours this should be your group only. On group tours, ask for the maximum capacity. A 44-foot catamaran with 25 people is a very different experience from one with 10.
2. How long do we spend at Kleftiko? Any milos boat tour worth booking should give you at least 60–90 minutes at Kleftiko. If the answer is "30 minutes" or vague, look elsewhere.
3. Is fuel included? Some operators add fuel costs at the end. Always confirm this before you book.
4. What is the cancellation policy if the weather is bad? In the Aegean, this matters. Reputable operators will reschedule or refund in full if conditions are unsafe.
5. Where do we depart from? Agia Kyriaki Beach is significantly closer to Kleftiko and Sykia than Adamas port. Departing from Agia Kyriaki means 20–25 more minutes of swimming time at the actual destination.
Common Mistakes When Booking a Milos Boat Tour
Booking too late. In July and August, the best operators are fully booked 1–2 weeks in advance. Book as soon as you know your dates.
Choosing the shortest tour to save money. A 4-hour tour to Kleftiko leaves you rushing the best part of the day. The extra time of a full-day tour is almost always worth it.
Not checking the departure location. Tours departing from Adamas can spend 45–60 minutes just getting to Kleftiko. Tours from Agia Kyriaki Beach are there in 40 minutes.
Booking through an aggregator when you can book direct. Platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator charge operators significant commission, which is often passed on to you. Booking directly with the operator — by phone, WhatsApp or email — is almost always better value and gives you direct communication for any changes.
