If you are reading this, you already know what Kleftiko looks like. The white rock formations. The turquoise lagoon. The sea caves you can swim through. It is the image that represents Milos more than any other — and it is the reason most people visit the island in the first place.
What fewer people know before they arrive is that there is no road to Kleftiko. No bus. No path down the cliff. The white rock formations you see in every photograph are on the southwestern tip of the island, completely cut off from the road network. The only way to reach them is by boat.
This guide covers every option for getting to Kleftiko from Milos — what each one involves, how long it takes, how much it costs, and which is right for your group.
Why There Is No Road to Kleftiko
Kleftiko sits at the very southwestern tip of the Milos coastline. The terrain between the nearest road and the rock formations is a series of steep volcanic cliffs dropping directly into the sea. There is no beach at the base of the cliffs — the rock meets the water — and no accessible path down from above.
This is not an oversight in the island's road planning. It is the geological reality of the south coast of Milos. The coastline between Agia Kyriaki Beach and Kleftiko is a continuous cliff face with no landing points accessible on foot.
The only way in is from the sea. And this is exactly why Kleftiko remains as beautiful as it is — the inaccessibility by land is what protects it from overcrowding and development.
Option 1 — Self-Drive Milos Boat Rental
Who it's for: Independent travellers, couples, families with older children, anyone who wants total freedom over their day.
How it works: You rent a boat from us at Agia Kyriaki Beach (or Adamas), receive a full safety briefing and a map, and drive yourself to Kleftiko. The journey takes approximately 40–45 minutes at a comfortable pace along the south coast.
No licence required for our Poseidon Blue Water 170 (50hp, up to 6 people). You anchor in the Kleftiko lagoon, swim, explore the caves, stay as long as you want and leave when you are ready. There is no fixed schedule.
Duration: Most guests spend 90 minutes to 2 hours at Kleftiko. With a full-day rental, you also have time to visit Sykia, Gerakas, Firiplaka and Tsigrado on the same day.
Best for: Anyone who wants to control their own itinerary and pace. First-time boaters are welcome — the briefing covers everything you need to know.

Option 2 — Private Skippered Cruise to Kleftiko
Who it's for: Families with young children, groups celebrating something, anyone who wants a local expert to handle navigation and show them the best spots.
How it works: You book the entire boat for your group. An experienced skipper from Poseidon Milos handles all navigation. You sit back, swim and explore while the skipper manages the boat, the anchoring and the timing.
The skipper knows the best anchorage position in the lagoon, the best time to visit the caves (before 11am), and the conditions of each cave entrance on any given day. This local knowledge makes a significant difference to the quality of the visit.

Option 3 — Group Boat Tour to Kleftiko
Who it's for: Solo travellers, budget-conscious visitors, couples who enjoy meeting other travellers.
How it works: You join other visitors on a larger shared boat — typically a catamaran or motorised vessel with 10–20 passengers. The tour runs to a fixed itinerary and departure time. Kleftiko is almost always included as the main stop.
What to check: How long the tour spends at Kleftiko (minimum 60 minutes — anything less is not enough). Whether snorkelling stops inside the caves are included. Departure and return times.
Best for: Solo travellers or couples who want a social experience and are flexible on timing.
Cost: Typically €70–€130 per person for a shared milos boat tour.
How Long Does It Take to Reach Kleftiko?
The journey time depends on your departure point:

Agia Kyriaki Beach is the best departure point for Kleftiko. It is on the south coast, significantly closer to the rock formations than Adamas. Choosing Agia Kyriaki means roughly 25 extra minutes of swimming time at Kleftiko compared to departing from Adamas.

What to Do Once You Are at Kleftiko
Anchor in the main lagoon. The lagoon is the enclosed body of water surrounded by the rock formations. Anchor here first, take in the view and decide where to swim first.
Swim through the main cave. Enter from the lagoon side, pass through a natural rock tunnel (wide enough for two people swimming side by side) and emerge in a smaller enclosed bay on the other side. This is the signature Kleftiko experience.
Snorkel along the base of the rock wall. The underwater formations are as dramatic as those above the surface. Visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres. Bring your own mask and fins for the best experience.
Explore the smaller caves to the right of the lagoon. Some are large enough to take the dinghy inside. The light inside changes dramatically through the morning.
Climb the accessible rocks on the left side for a view back across the lagoon and out to sea. Not technical — basic scrambling — but the perspective is worth it.
Arrive before 10am. By midday in July and August, the Kleftiko lagoon has multiple boats anchored in it. Arriving early means you have the caves almost entirely to yourself.
The Best Time to Visit Kleftiko
Best months: May, June and September. Calmer sea conditions, fewer boats in the lagoon, lower prices.
Best time of day: Before 10am. The morning light hits the white rock at the best angle and the lagoon is at its quietest.
Avoid: Strong meltemi conditions (July–August primarily). The lagoon itself is sheltered but the journey from Agia Kyriaki is uncomfortable in 5+ Beaufort conditions. We always advise on conditions before departure and will reschedule if necessary.
Kleftiko and Sykia — Visit Both on the Same Day
Sykia is a collapsed sea cave 10 minutes west of Kleftiko. It is completely different in character — enclosed, still, cathedral-like — but equally extraordinary. Most boat days include both stops on the same route.
The combination of Kleftiko (90 minutes) and Sykia (45 minutes) takes around 2.5–3 hours including travel time from Agia Kyriaki. This fits comfortably in a half-day rental or the 5-hour cruise.
