Best Time to Visit Milos by Boat — Month by Month Guide (2026)
The honest answer to "when is the best time to visit Milos by boat" is May, June and September. The water is warm, the meltemi wind is manageable, the anchorages are not yet crowded and prices are lower than peak season.
But that is the short answer. The longer answer depends on what you want from your day on the water — and this guide breaks it down month by month so you can make the right decision for your trip.
Understanding the Meltemi — the Most Important Factor
Before anything else, you need to understand the meltemi. This is the northerly wind that blows across the Aegean in summer, and it is the single biggest variable in planning a boat day in Milos.
The meltemi typically runs from mid-June through August. In a moderate year it blows at 3–4 Beaufort for a few days at a time, then drops for a day or two, then returns. In a strong year it can reach 5–6 Beaufort for extended periods, which makes the crossing to Polyaigos uncomfortable and some anchorages choppy.
What the meltemi affects:
- The crossing to Polyaigos and Kimolos — open water, exposed to northerly swell
- The approach to Sykia — the entrance passage is uncomfortable in swell above 0.5m
- Comfort on the boat during passages — a 6 Beaufort meltemi means significant spray and bouncing
What the meltemi does NOT affect:
- Kleftiko — the main lagoon is sheltered from the north by the rock formation
- Firiplaka — sheltered from north and west
- Gerakas — sheltered from north and west
- Tsigrado — sheltered on all sides
The south coast beaches remain accessible in most meltemi conditions. It is the crossings to outer islands and the cave entrances that become difficult.
Month by Month
May — Excellent
Weather: Warm but not hot. Air temperature 22–26°C. Sea temperature around 20°C — cool but very swimmable.
Wind: Generally calm or light. The meltemi has not yet established. Sea conditions are almost always good.
Crowds: Very low. You will have Kleftiko almost entirely to yourself. Polyaigos is deserted.
Prices: Pre-season rates. Both rental and cruise prices are at their lowest.
What to expect: The best conditions for a full south coast day. Cool enough to be comfortable on the boat. Calm enough to reach everywhere including Polyaigos and Sykia without worrying about conditions. The only downside is the sea temperature — for anyone sensitive to cold water, May swimming requires some acclimatisation.
Verdict: The single best month for a boat day in Milos if you can make it work with your travel dates.
June — Excellent
Weather: Hot and sunny. Air temperature 26–30°C. Sea temperature 22–24°C — warm and comfortable.
Wind: The meltemi begins establishing in the second half of June. Early June has the same calm conditions as May. Late June can see the first meltemi episodes but they are usually short.
Crowds: Building through the month. Early June is very quiet. Late June starts to feel like summer.
Prices: Pre-peak season. Lower than July and August.
What to expect: June is the sweet spot — warm water, manageable wind, reasonable crowds. The full south coast route including Polyaigos is almost always achievable. Book in advance for late June as accommodation and boats fill up.
Verdict: Tied with May as the best month for a boat day. The warmer sea temperature makes June slightly more comfortable for swimming.
July — Good with Caveats
Weather: Hot. Air temperature 28–33°C. Sea temperature 24–26°C — perfect for swimming.
Wind: The meltemi is fully established. Expect multiple episodes of 4–5 Beaufort wind during the month. The wind typically peaks in the afternoon. Morning departures are significantly better than afternoon.
Crowds: High. The anchorage at Kleftiko is busy by 11am. Polyaigos has more boat traffic than in spring.
Prices: Peak season rates. Both rentals and cruises are at maximum price.
What to expect: July is peak season and it shows. The boats are all booked. The beaches are busy. But the conditions are still good for most south coast routes — the meltemi is manageable on most days and the south coast beaches remain accessible. Depart early (before 9am) to get to Kleftiko before the crowds.
Verdict: Excellent swimming conditions but challenging on crowded days. Early morning departures are essential. Book weeks in advance.
August — Good with More Caveats
Weather: The hottest month. Air temperature 30–35°C. Sea temperature 26–28°C.
Wind: The meltemi is at its strongest and most consistent. The second half of August typically sees the strongest winds of the year. Days with 5–6 Beaufort north wind are more common in August than any other month. Some days the crossing to Polyaigos is not advisable.
Crowds: Maximum. Kleftiko is crowded by 10am. The parking areas at Agia Kyriaki fill up early.
Prices: Peak season. Maximum rates everywhere.
What to expect: August is the most unpredictable month for boat days. In a calm week, conditions are perfect. In a strong meltemi week, some routes are limited. We always advise guests on conditions the day before departure and offer alternatives if the planned route is not achievable.
The south coast beaches — Kleftiko, Firiplaka, Gerakas, Tsigrado — remain accessible on almost all days. It is Polyaigos, Kimolos and Sykia that become conditional.
Verdict: The most popular month but not the best. If you are visiting in August, book your milos boat rental or milos cruise well in advance. Accept that the itinerary may need to flex depending on conditions.
September — Outstanding
Weather: Warm and clear. Air temperature 25–30°C. Sea temperature 24–26°C — still warm from the summer.
Wind: The meltemi drops significantly from mid-September. Calm conditions become more frequent. Sea state is generally better than July and August.
Crowds: Dropping fast from the first week of September. By mid-September, Kleftiko has a fraction of the August crowds. By late September it is almost back to May levels.
Prices: Starting to drop from late August rates. Significant savings versus peak season.
What to expect: September is arguably the best overall month for a boat day in Milos. The water is still warm from summer. The crowds have thinned. The wind is calming down. Polyaigos and Sykia are reliably accessible again. And you can get to Kleftiko at 9am and have it almost to yourself.
Verdict: The best month for experienced visitors who want the complete experience without peak season crowds and prices.
October — Good for Calm Day Trips
Weather: Pleasant. Air temperature 20–25°C. Sea temperature dropping through the month — around 22°C in early October, 20°C by the end.
Wind: Generally calm. When wind occurs it is usually from the south rather than the meltemi north. More variable conditions overall.
Crowds: Very low. Most tourist operations have wound down.
What to expect: October boat days are possible and often beautiful. The challenge is that fewer operators run regular services and the sea temperature starts to feel cool for extended swimming. Kleftiko in October is extraordinary — the autumn light on the white rock is exceptional and you will likely be completely alone.
Verdict: Good for those who do not mind cooler water and want genuine solitude.
The Best Days Within Any Month
Regardless of which month you visit, the best boat days share common characteristics:
Depart early. Before 9am from Agia Kyriaki means arriving at Kleftiko before 10am — the single most significant factor in a good day. The difference between arriving at 9:30am and 11:30am at Kleftiko is enormous in July and August.
Watch the forecast. The meltemi almost always builds through the afternoon. A 3 Beaufort morning can become a 5 Beaufort afternoon. If conditions look doubtful for the afternoon, we always depart early and plan to be heading back by 3–4pm.
Be flexible on destination. On days when conditions make Polyaigos uncomfortable, the south coast beaches are almost always still good. A day at Kleftiko, Sykia, Gerakas and Firiplaka is not a compromise — it is an exceptional day.
